2,6-Dioxaspiro[3.3]heptane is an oxetane that reacts with nucleophiles to form adducts. It is synthesized by the reaction of 1,2-diaminocyclohexane and cyclohexene oxide in the presence of a base and a catalyst. The addition is spontaneous and the rate constant for this reaction is second order. This compound has been used as an additive in polymer resins and polymers to improve their radiation stability. 2,6-Dioxaspiro[3.3]heptane also has bifunctional properties because it can react with other electrophiles to form adducts or it can react with nucleophiles to form adducts.
