Naphtho[2,3-E]pyrene is a synthetic hydrocarbon that has been shown to be carcinogenic in animal tests. It is soluble in organic solvents and can be found in the environment as a result of air pollution. Naphtho[2,3-E]pyrene is not mutagenic but can be metabolized by cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) into a number of mutagenic metabolites. The most common arene isomer of naphtho[2,3-E]pyrene is 2,3'-dihydroxybenzo[e][1,4]dioxin (DHBD). This substance binds to DNA and causes mutations which lead to cancer.
