Benzo[G]chrysene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that can be found in coal tar and cigarette smoke. It is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Benzo[G]chrysene has been shown to bind to DNA duplexes and form covalent adducts with guanine, which may lead to increased risk of cancer. The binding of benzo[G]chrysene to DNA is competitively inhibited by epoxides, epidermal growth factor, and human serum albumin. The bioactivation of benzo[G]chrysene has been shown to occur through the michaelis-menten kinetics mechanism in rat liver microsomes.
