11H-Benzo[a]carbazole is a class of quinoline derivatives. It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals and has been shown to have carcinogenic effects. 11H-Benzo[a]carbazole binds to the receptor for acetylcholine, which inhibits the function of the sympathetic nervous system and causes relaxation of smooth muscle. It also has been shown to be toxic to rats when administered orally and has a chemical stability that is better than benzene, with transport properties that are similar to those of benzene. This compound is produced by the reaction between hydrogen cyanide and benzoic acid. 11H-Benzo[a]carbazole has a molecular formula C9H7N3O and an asymmetric structure, with a carbonyl group at one end (C=O).
