2,3-Benzofluorene is a chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon. It is used as a reagent in analytical chemistry to measure the chloride yields of organic compounds. 2,3-Benzofluorene is also used as a rat lung carcinogen and has been shown to cause liver cancer in mice. This compound can be synthesized by reacting benzene with hydrogen fluoride gas or sulfuric acid. The synthesis of 2,3-benzofluorene consists of two steps: (1) conversion of benzene to phenol, followed by (2) chlorination of phenol with chlorine gas.
