Thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine is a pyrimidine compound that has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against cancer cells in culture. This drug inhibits the growth of cancer cells by binding to the epidermal growth factor receptor and causing the death of these cells. Thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine also has minimal toxicity and can be administered systemically. In addition, this agent has been shown to inhibit the growth of stromal tumours in mice without any observed toxic effects on other tissues or organs. Thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine binds to carbon disulfide with a strong hydrogen bond and can be used as an antimicrobial agent.
