5α-Dihydrodeoxycorticosterone (5α-DHDC) is a progesterone metabolite that binds to the progesterone receptor and inhibits its transcriptional activity. 5α-DHDC has been shown to enhance the antidepressant effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in animal models. It also produces an increase in blood pressure, which may be due to its antagonistic effect on the mineralocorticoid receptor. This drug has clinical relevance as it is used for the treatment of depression and high blood pressure. 5α-DHDC is a potent allosteric modulator of the mineralocorticoid receptor, with a binding affinity comparable to dexamethasone.
