3-Amino-L-tyrosine is a tyrosine amino acid that interacts with cell membranes. 3-Amino-L-tyrosine can bind to nitrite ions and form protonated molecules, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on cells. This compound has also been shown to increase the production of an enzyme called diphenolase in HL60 cells, which is important for the synthesis of DNA and RNA. 3-Amino-L-tyrosine has been shown to inhibit all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) induced differentiation of k562 cells and fetal bovine retinoblasts. It inhibits the growth of human leukemia cells by binding to their cell nuclei and preventing mitosis. The macroscopic reaction mechanism for this compound is unknown, but it is known that it contains a hydroxyl group.
