Etamivan is a drug that belongs to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is used in the treatment of chronic pulmonary diseases, such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Etamivan inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by blocking the cyclooxygenase enzyme. This inhibition reduces inflammation and pain associated with these conditions. The drug also has an analgesic effect and can be taken orally or intravenously. Etamivan may have adverse effects on renal function due to its ability to bind to sodium citrate in the gastrointestinal tract and form a chemical species. These interactions are also responsible for its side effects, which include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach irritation.
