Iodoacetic acid, sodium salt is an analytical agent that is used for the detection of guanine nucleotide-binding proteins. It inhibits the activity of these proteins by covalently binding to cysteine residues within the protein. Iodoacetic acid, sodium salt can also be used as a pharmacological agent in clinical trials to determine if a drug interacts with a G-protein. This compound has been shown to inhibit the response element and suppress transcription of genes involved in inflammatory bowel disease. The compound has also been shown to bind to antigen binding molecules, which may be useful for detecting infectious agents such as bacteria.
