Methyl benzo[d][1,3]dioxole-5-carboxylate is a prodrug of the active form, benzo[d][1,3]dioxole-5-carboxylic acid. It is used in the treatment of bowel disease and can be administered orally or intravenously. Methyl benzo[d][1,3]dioxole-5-carboxylate works by inhibiting the proteolytic enzymes that digest proteins in the small intestine. This drug has been shown to have an optimum concentration of 10-20 mg/mL when incubated with human ileal tissue. Methyl benzo[d][1,3]dioxole-5-carboxylate has also been shown to inhibit the activity of several inflammatory enzymes such as cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase. This drug also has a protective effect on the lungs by inhibiting expiratory flow and clearing out
