2,5-Dinitrophenol is a chemical substance that is used as a growth regulator in agriculture. It inhibits bacterial population growth by disrupting cellular metabolism and interfering with the synthesis of nucleic acids. 2,5-Dinitrophenol can be detected using chromatography and has a linear regression analysis with a detection sensitivity of 10 ng/mL. It reacts with nitro groups to form nitroso compounds and can also deuterate hydroxyl groups to form deuterium isotope effects. This chemical substance has been shown to have toxicity profiles in bacteria, yeast, and mammals. Toxicity may be due to inhibition of protein synthesis or DNA damage from reactive oxygen species that are produced during metabolism.
