3',3'',5',5''-Tetraiodophenolphthalein is a contrast agent used in diagnostic imaging, such as X-ray and CT scans. It is administered orally or intravenously and binds to the biliary ducts in the liver. This dye can also be used for diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease by inducing an inflammatory response in the colon and rectum. 3',3'',5',5''-Tetraiodophenolphthalein is excreted through the kidneys, making it useful for detecting bladder and bowel diseases. The dye may also be used in phase chromatography to detect proteinuria, which is indicative of kidney disease. 3',3'',5',5''-Tetraiodophenolphthalein has been shown to have a negative effect on damaged tissue due to its strong oxidant properties.
