1,7-Dimethylfluorene is a molecule that has been shown to cause fluorescence when in crystalline form. Chemists have utilized this property to identify 1,7-dimethylfluorene in the presence of other molecules. Although 1,7-dimethylfluorene has not been extensively studied in crop plants, it has been found to increase yields and reduce toxins in some cases. This molecule is not resistant against herbicides such as zingiberol or gamma-terpinene and can be used as an attractant for insects. 1,7-Dimethylfluorene also encodes a synthase protein that assists in the production of plant hormones.
