2-Amino-3-(methylsulfanyl)butanoic acid is an amino acid that can be used as a denaturant in biochemical assays. It has been shown to have threonine specific activity, which is the ability to inhibit the growth of S. typhimurium and other bacteria. 2-Amino-3-(methylsulfanyl) butanoic acid also has the ability to inhibit light chain synthesis in cultured mouse spleen cells and complex oligosaccharide biosynthesis in E. coli. This compound is resistant to degradation by pancreatin, which indicates that it may be an analog of L-threonine.
