Benzilide is a benzimidazole derivative that binds to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and inhibits the formation of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in the brain. It has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of galacturonic acid, which is important for the production of collagen, and also has been shown to inhibit creatine production. The thermal expansion coefficient of benzilide is much lower than that of water, which causes it to crystallize at a higher temperature. Benzilide can be used as a stabilizer in ester compounds, and its hydroxy group can react with amines or chlorine atoms to form new products.
