Damnacanthal is a natural compound that has been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cells. It is derived from the leaves of the plant Etoac (Eucalyptus tereticornis) and possesses minimal toxicity. Studies have shown that damnacanthal induces apoptosis in HL-60 cells, which are human promyelocytic leukemia cells, by inhibiting the angiogenic process. It also inhibits the cytosolic Ca2+ levels and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) activity of cancer cells. Damnacanthal was also found to inhibit carcinogenesis induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in rats.
