Tocotrienols are a class of phytochemicals that are structurally similar to vitamin E. They can be found in plants such as rice bran, wheat germ, and barley, as well as in palm oil, soybean, and corn oils. Tocotrienols have been shown to reduce the incidence of nematode infections in animals and also exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. There are many analytical methods for tocotrienols including fingerprinting techniques (e.g., GC-MS), reductive elimination techniques (e.g., HPLC), and ionization techniques (e.g., LC-MS). The hydroxyl group on the 3 position of the tocotrienol molecule is responsible for its biological activity.
