Chimaphilin is a natural phenolic compound found in grapes and wine. It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and human cancer cells. Chimaphilin has been shown to inhibit the growth of human osteosarcoma cells by inhibiting mitochondrial membrane potential, DNA synthesis, and protein synthesis. It also induces apoptosis in tumor cells by activating caspase-3, -7, and -9. Chimaphilin also inhibits the growth of C2C12 myotubes by preventing the activation of protein kinase A (PKA). This inhibition prevents the phosphorylation of the myogenic regulatory factor 2 (MRF2), which leads to decreased expression of muscle-specific genes such as MyoD1 and myogenin.
