It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in water and most organic solvents. 2-Amino-A-oxo-benzeneacetic acid has been used in pharmaceutical preparations since the 1930s, primarily as a solvent for alkaloids, fatty acids, and other organic compounds. It can also be used to make picolinic acid and protonated anthranilic acid. In addition, it reacts with hydroxyl groups to form esters or ethers. The high resistance of this compound to hydrochloric acid makes it useful in the synthesis of certain pharmaceutical drugs.
