Alpha-isolupanine is a natural product that belongs to the class of secondary metabolites. It is an analytical standard that can be used for quality control in HPLC and other bioassays. Alpha-isolupanine has been isolated from the plant species Isatis indigotica, which is a member of the Cruciferae family. This compound has shown antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus anthracis. It also inhibits protein synthesis in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by binding to ribosomes at the peptidyl transferase center. Alpha-isolupanine also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
