Methyl 1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-3-carboxylate is a natural compound that has been shown to have pharmacological effects as an analytical agent. It is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme DNA polymerase and is used in the detection of DNA damage. The compound also inhibits the activity of human cardiovascular enzymes such as phospholipase A2 and lipoxygenase. Methyl 1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-3-carboxylate also has an inhibitory effect on HIV infection and may be able to block viral replication. The mechanism by which methyl 1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-3-carboxylate exerts its antiviral effect against HIV is unknown but may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of nitric oxide or prostaglandins.
