Chlorthion is a chemical compound that contains a chlorine atom. It inhibits the production of nitric oxide by binding to the enzyme nitric oxide synthase, which converts arginine to citrulline. Chlorthion is used as a model of the inhibitory effect of organophosphate pesticides on the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. Studies have shown that chlorthion has high resistance in control studies and can be found in higher concentrations in biological samples than other organophosphates. In addition, it has been shown that chlorthion binds to DNA and inhibits protein synthesis by forming covalent bonds with phosphate groups. Chlorthion can be eliminated from the body through reactions with rat liver microsomes or excretion in urine. The elimination rate of chlorthion is relatively fast, with a half-life of about 1 hour. Analytical methods for detecting chlorthion include gas chromatography and liquid chromatography-mass
