Indophenol is a chemical that has inhibitory properties against bacterial growth. It inhibits the enzyme activity of bacteria, which is necessary for them to grow and reproduce. Indophenol can be used as a chemiluminescent substrate in an assay to measure enzyme activity. This chemical is also able to react with sodium carbonate and light signal to produce a redox potential that can be measured with an electrode. The redox potentials are generated by the oxidation of indophenol, which leads to the generation of electrons. These electrons reduce hydrogen peroxide, which produces the light signal. Indophenol is also used as a model system for plant physiology, specifically hydroxyl group reactions.
