Perhydrofarnesyl acetone is a sesquiterpene lactone that is found in the essential oil of cinnamon and cassia. This compound has been shown to be genotoxic in vitro and significantly cytotoxic to colorectal cancer cells. It also has a number of biological properties including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antiviral effects. Perhydrofarnesyl acetone has been shown to have probiotic effects on E. coli K-12 cells as well as other beneficial activities. The compound inhibits the microbial metabolism of oxygenated compounds by means of a surface methodology technique used to determine its affinity for bacteria surfaces.
