It reacts with hydroxy groups and other functional groups in DNA and also has the ability to form adducts with DNA bases. The high reactivity of 2,2,2-tribromoethane-1,1-diol makes it a good candidate for use as a radical initiator in chemical reactions. This chemical can be found in glycol ethers and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) assays.
