Penogenin is a molecule that belongs to the group of medicines. It is used as an anti-cancer agent and an anti-inflammatory drug. Penogenin inhibits the growth of cancer cells by reducing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS are highly reactive molecules that can cause damage to DNA, proteins, and lipids in human cells. Penogenin also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of prostaglandins by blocking cyclooxygenase activity. In addition, penogenin has been shown to protect against ischemia reperfusion injury in rats by inhibiting lipid peroxidation products. The chemical structure of penogenin consists of a hydroxyl group on a carbon atom connected by a glycosidic bond to an aromatic ring with three methyl groups on the ring. This compound is found in Trilliaceae plants and has been shown to have anticancer and cardioprotective activities in experimental
