2,2'-Furildioxime is a photoactive compound that can be used in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration. It is used as a photosensitizer for the photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancerous lesions and other skin diseases. 2,2'-Furildioxime is activated by ultraviolet radiation and has been shown to be effective in the treatment of eye disorders such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. The mechanism by which 2,2'-furildioxime works is not well understood but it has been shown to react with proteins, lipids and nucleic acids, leading to inactivation.
