Ethyl acetylsalicylate is an ester of salicylic acid with the carboxylic acid group replaced with an ethyl group. It is used in veterinary medicine as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders in animals. Ethyl acetylsalicylate is effective as a painkiller and anti-inflammatory agent because it inhibits prostaglandin synthesis and has a local anaesthetic effect. The inhibitory effect on prostaglandin production is due to its ability to compete with acetylsalicylic acid for the enzyme acetylesterase, which converts the ester to salicylic acid. This inhibition prevents conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandins, which are involved in inflammation and pain response.
