N,N-Diethylisonicotinamide is a potent antimicrobial agent that has been postulated to act by way of an alkylating mechanism. It has been shown to react with hydroxyl groups in bacterial DNA and inhibits the synthesis of proteins essential for cell division. N,N-Diethylisonicotinamide may also inhibit the growth of fungi by attacking their membrane lipids. It reacts with 2-bromopyridine-3-carbaldehyde to form a hydrophobic intermediate that reacts with azafluorenone to form an azafluorenone derivative that is then coupled with an azaanthraquinone or diazaquinomycin. This process leads to the formation of a naphthoquinone or anthraquinone ring system.
