Benzyl ethyl ether is a phase transition temperature of -34.4°C, which is below body temperature. It can be used in pharmaceutical preparations as a polycarboxylic acid to form films that are insoluble at physiological pH. Benzyl ethyl ether has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against skin cells and microorganisms. The antimicrobial activity may be due to the benzyl groups and alkanoic acid that are present in this molecule. This compound also acts as a chelating agent for metals and can bind to the metal ions that are found in bacteria, preventing them from replicating. The fatty acid chains attached to the benzyl group increase the solubility of this compound in water and make it a good choice for microcapsules or film-forming polymers.
