Phytanic acid, also called 2-hydroxytetracosanoic acid, is a fatty acid that is found in the lipid of plants. It may be a possible diagnostic marker for colorectal adenocarcinoma. Phytanic acid has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and inhibit tumor growth in cell cultures. This compound also has been shown to have a high affinity for basic proteins, such as cerebroside, which may be due to its hydroxyl group and nitrogen atoms. The optimum pH for the activity of phytanic acid is around 7.4. Phytanic acid can be synthesized by the addition of hydrogen fluoride with an inorganic acid.
