Sclerotiorin is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene. It inhibits the activity of methylesterases and methyltransferases, which are enzymes that play a role in microbial metabolism. Sclerotiorin has been shown to be an effective anti-infective agent with no detectable toxicity against mammalian cells. It is also a potent COX-2 inhibitor, which may be useful for treating inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
