N-Methyldiphenylamine is a fluorescent probe that has been used in organic solvent viscosity measurements. It has also been used in optical measurements to study the properties of amines. N-Methyldiphenylamine absorbs light at a wavelength of 350nm and emits light at a wavelength of 550nm, which can be detected by a photomultiplier tube. It reacts with silver ions to generate silver nitrate and chloride ions. The reaction mechanism is thought to involve transfer reactions, which results in low energy activation energies for the reaction.
