n-Phenylmaleamic acid is a chemical that is used in wastewater treatment. It binds to the metal palladium and is selectively reduced by hydrogen to form organometallic complexes. This reduction process is thought to be catalyzed by hydrochloric acid, which aids in deprotonating a phenyl ring. The resulting anion can then bind to sodium ions, forming an amide bond. n-Phenylmaleamic acid has been shown to be toxic to the human liver and kidneys, although it does not have carcinogenic properties. n-Phenylmaleamic acid also has kinetic data available for its reaction with calcium stearate and anhydrous sodium, which may be helpful in determining the activation energies of this reaction.
