2-Iodooctane is a non-polar solvent that can be used in organic reactions. It is a model system for examining the radical chain reaction, which is initiated with proton abstraction from an amine by a primary alcohol to form an alkyl radical (R•). This initiates chain propagation, leading to the formation of dimethylformamide and acetonitrile. The 2-iodooctane reaction vessel has been shown to have high viscosity and carbanion characteristics. Photolysis of 2-iodooctane yields iodine radicals that are highly reactive and polar. The 2-iodooctane reaction vessel has been shown to be able to react with halides, such as chlorine or bromide, as well as iron catalysts.
