Methyl acetylsalicylate is an analog of the salicylate compound with a methyl group at the 2 position. It is used in pharmaceuticals and has been shown to be effective against degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease. Methyl acetylsalicylate can be synthesized by reacting benzoic acid with acetyl chloride and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. The reaction solution can be diluted with water to a viscosity that is suitable for injection into a human body. Methyl acetylsalicylate has been shown to have cytosolic calcium-modulating effects, which may help to prevent Alzheimer's disease by inhibiting the production of amyloid beta peptides in the brain.
