²-Methylphenethylamine-d4 is a synthetic precursor of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) that can be used for the detection of amines in biological samples. This compound has been used to study the serotonergic system in humans and animals. It also inhibits locomotor activity, and has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties that are different from those of lysergic acid diethylamide. Its asymmetric synthesis has been achieved using a copper complex as a catalyst for the condensation reaction between 2-methylbenzaldehyde and paraformaldehyde.
