Terrein is a natural product that has been shown to inhibit the polymerase chain reaction. It also inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential and induces apoptosis in cancer cells. Not much is known about Terrein's mechanism of action, but it has been shown to bind to DNA in an electrophoretic mobility shift assay. Terrein may also have antimicrobial properties, as it has been shown to inhibit the growth of infectious bacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Terrein is thought to be a potent inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) activity, which suggests it may also have anti-inflammatory properties.
