Azobenzene-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (AADC) is a hydrogen bond donor that has been used as a model system to study the formation of acids. AADC also inhibits antibody responses in mice and has been shown to have skin reactions. It binds to n-dimethyl formamide with high resistance and reacts with radiation to form an intramolecular hydrogen bond. The reaction mechanism for this compound is believed to be irreversible inhibition by intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the carboxyl group and the azobenzene moiety. The benzoate ester of AADC is an intermediate in the reaction pathway and may be responsible for its inhibitory activity.
