Lead thiocyanate is a cancer drug that is used to treat ocular and skin cancers. It reacts with the tissue in these cancers and forms cross-links, which disrupts the function of DNA, RNA, and proteins. Lead thiocyanate has been shown to be more effective than other cross-linking agents such as cisplatin or carboplatin. Lead thiocyanate also has optical properties that make it a good candidate for use in solar cells because of its ability to absorb light. The reaction products formed by lead thiocyanate are phenolic acid and tissue antigens. This agent also has been used to treat intestinal parasites including Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Ascaris lumbricoides. It is not active against tapeworms or pinworms.
