4-Methyl-4-heptanol is a non-polar solvent that is used as a component of some plastics and in the production of dyes, paints, and other coatings. It has a boiling point of around 100°C at atmospheric pressure. 4-Methyl-4-heptanol is also used in the synthesis of amherstia, an antiarrhythmic drug. This compound can be transformed into cyclic compounds by heating it with phenylmagnesium bromide. The synergistic effect of 4-methyl-4-heptanol with other solvents is due to its ability to increase the frequency of rotations around the carbon atom.
