1,2-Dihydroxy-3-methylanthraquinone is a chromatographically pure compound. It is a potent inhibitor of phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE-5) and may be used in the treatment of cancer. 1,2-Dihydroxy-3-methylanthraquinone also has inhibitory effects on PDE-5 in vitro and in vivo. This compound was shown to have an inhibitory effect on PDE-5 by binding to the active site of this enzyme, blocking the catalysis of cGMP and inhibiting the production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).
