Pentabromophenol is a brominated compound that is used in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics, as well as in flame retardants and other industrial applications. It is also used to measure thermal expansion. The anhydrous sodium pentabromophenol can be prepared by heating the hydrochloric acid with the 2,3,4,5,6-pentabromophenol. Pentabromophenols are found in human serum samples and can be identified using a simple analytical method based on methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) or hexane extraction. This pentabromophenol is structurally related to fatty acids and can be synthesized using an enzymatic reaction from rat liver microsomes and fetal bovine serum.
