3-Methyl-4-nitrosophenol is a byproduct of the synthesis of sodium nitrate. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on mitochondrial polymerization, which would lead to decreased ATP production. 3-Methyl-4-nitrosophenol also inhibits the transport chain and reduces the amount of NADH produced in the mitochondria, which can lead to cell death.
