Product Information

Name:
α-Chlorostyrene
Description:

α-Chlorostyrene is an organic compound with the molecular formula CHCl. It is a chlorinated derivative of styrene and is used as a building block in organic synthesis. α-Chlorostyrene can be prepared by chlorinating styrene at low temperatures, or by reacting it with hydrogen chloride gas and sodium metal. The reaction mechanism for this process involves the formation of an amide intermediate, followed by protonation, chlorination, and reductive elimination to form α-chlorostyrene. This homologous series can be extended to include other chlorinated derivatives of styrene such as β-chlorostyrene, γ-chlorostyrene, and δ-chlorostyrene.

α-Chlorostyrene has been shown to react with amides to produce carbenes that undergo reductive elimination to form an alkene. This reaction has been used in mechanistic studies to study the conversion of olefins
