Benzyl sulfone is a natural product of microbial metabolism. It is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of fatty acids, which are important components of cell membranes. Benzyl sulfone can be synthesized by the reaction of nitrogen with hydrogen and sulfur dioxide. The molecule has a sulfonyl group attached to a benzene ring, and can react with other molecules through hydrogen bonding interactions. Benzyl sulfone has been shown to have anticancer properties in cell culture studies and is also used as a solid catalyst for cationic polymerization reactions. This compound has been shown to react with radiation and form nitrosated benzyl sulfones that are mutagenic or carcinogenic.
