3-Nitrophenetole is a nitrophenol that is used as a solvent and intermediate in the production of other organic compounds. 3-Nitrophenetole has shown mutagenicity to calf thymus DNA in vitro, although it does not show mutagenicity to bacterial DNA in vitro. It has been shown to have a nucleophilic reaction time of 4 hours and reacts with chloride ions at lower concentrations than nitrobenzaldehyde or nitrotoluene. 3-Nitrophenetole is an isomer of 2-nitrophenetole and undergoes demethylation when irradiated with UV light, yielding 2-nitrophenol and n-propyl alcohol.
