4-(Ethylthio)toluene is a heteroaromatic compound that can be synthesized by the cross-coupling of a homologous series of sulfoxides. It is an enantiomer of 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenethiol and has been shown to inhibit the growth of human liver cells in culture. 4-(Ethylthio)toluene also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the ribosomal RNA in the bacterial cell membrane. This inhibits protein synthesis and leads to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. 4-(Ethylthio)toluene is metabolized through two different pathways: aziridine or sulfinyl/sulfoxide reactions. The flavin cofactor is used during the latter process, which may explain its constant activity against bacteria.
