3-Chloropropyl acetate is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor. It is an impurity in the production of chloropropyl chloride and can also be used as a solvent in the preparation of oxetane. 3-Chloropropyl acetate is produced by reacting ethyl bromoacetate with chlorine, which produces an intermediate that reacts with amines to produce the final product. The reaction mechanism for this process has not been confirmed. 3-Chloropropyl acetate has not been found to have any use in chromatography yet, but its potential use as a particle carrier has been proposed. This compound has been shown to be genotoxic, due to its inclusion of oxetane, which is known to cause chromosomal aberrations and mutations.
